Branded Clothing: A Strategic Pillar of the European Creative and Economic Landscape

Branded clothing represents a central component of the global branded goods sector and a significant contributor to the creative economy. The product scope includes apparel, footwear, bags, and accessories.

The companies and brands represented by the European Branded Clothing Association (EBCA) are characterised by their management of complex global value chains. These encompass brand and product development, sourcing, manufacturing, logistics, marketing, sales, and retail operations—rendering the industry highly trade-intensive.

Within the European Union, the branded clothing industry exerts a substantial economic and employment impact.

According to a study conducted by Oxford Economics, in 2023, the industry proved to be a vital pillar of the EU economy, contributing €331.8 billion to GDP and supporting 4.5 million jobs.

• Direct Impact: The industry directly added €55.4 billion to GDP, representing 8.5% of the EU’s retail and trade sector.
• Indirect Impact: Through its supply chain, it generated an additional €190.1 billion.
• Induced Impact: Consumer spending by those employed in the sector contributed a further €86.2 billion

The industry directly employed 1.3 million people—9.4% of the retail and trade workforce. Notably, women made up 62.8% of this direct employment. Including indirect and induced effects, the industry supported 3.2 million additional jobs. For every direct job, 2.5 more were supported elsewhere in the economy.

This reflects the strategic retention of high-skilled, high-value-added roles within Europe—positions that not only demand advanced expertise but also offer higher wages and contribute significantly to the region’s economic resilience.

As a trade-intensive sector, the branded clothing industry has positioned the EU as a global leader—ranking among the top importers and as the second-largest exporter of apparel, footwear, and bags worldwide.
